The 75th Annual Kermit Long Fishing Derby Results

Erin Swirla-Miller
July 28, 2025

We had an incredible turnout and a fantastic time at this year’s 75th Annual Kermit Long Fishing Derby! With 78 entries and 31 kids out on the water, it was a record-breaking day in more ways than one – including the hottest day on record. Despite the heat and slow bites, spirits stayed high, and everyone enjoyed a day of fishing, fun, and community.

Prizes and Awards

Trophies and cash prizes were awarded to the top three entries in each category:

  • 1st Place: $10
  • 2nd Place: $7
  • 3rd Place: $5

Each top three winner also received a grand prize gift pack, which included:

  • Fishing rods (x3)
  • Tackle box
  • Bait boxes (x2)
  • Small tackle box with lures and hooks
  • Fish grippers
  • Gift certificates (including $50 for Canadian Tire and one from Summerland General Store)
  • Assortment of lures
  • Kahshe Lake swag (hats and bandanas)

Every participant received a swag bag filled with candy, chips, and fishing gear. Even those who didn’t catch anything got a loot bag with lures and candy — because at this Derby, everyone goes home with something!

A Big Thank You

A huge shout-out to the KBLA, who helps fund this event for the lake, and Paul Caswell from Denne’s Marina for generously opening his docks for fish measuring.

We’re especially grateful to our hardworking on-site volunteers:

  • Xavier Lajoie
  • Christina Irwin
  • Erin Kelly
  • Robert Steimer

These folks were dockside bright and early, measuring fish and logging entries with enthusiasm and care.

This year also brought some heartfelt changes. As longtime organizers Luke and Erin Miller (Swirla) stepped back to honour the memory of one of our own. Christine Wright–Irwin, Kelly Tait and their families stepped up at the last minute to run the event – and they did a phenomenal job. We are deeply thankful for their dedication and community spirit.

Donations and Support

The support we received this year was truly overwhelming. Donations ranged from cash and fishing gear to candy for loot bags and even lunch for our volunteers.

Special thanks to:

  • Bob and Kathy Moores
  • Sandy and Paul Cutting
  • The Bates Family
  • Mike Bradley and Family
  • KBLA for donating amazing Kahshe Lake merch

All prizes were awarded on Sunday, July 27th, and thanks to every generous donor and participant, it was a huge success!
