Erin Swirla-Miller Receives 10th Annual 2025 Volunteer of the Year Award

It is with great admiration and deep appreciation that we proudly recognize Erin Swirla-Miller as the 10th recipient of the Kahshe and Bass Lakes Association (KBLA) Volunteer of the Year Award.
Erin embodies the very spirit of community through her unwavering dedication, incredible energy, and generous heart.
For several years, Erin has led the charge in organizing the beloved Kermit Long Fishing Derby, a cherished Kahshe tradition that brings together families, children, and anglers of all ages. This year marks an especially meaningful milestone—the 75th annual Fishing Derby—and also Erin’s final year at the helm.
What many don’t see is the tremendous effort that happens behind the scenes all year long. Erin works tirelessly to coordinate logistics, gather prizes, build loot bags, recruit volunteers, and ensure that every young participant leaves with a smile. Thanks to her leadership, what could have been lost to time has instead grown stronger with each passing year.
Of course, Erin’s efforts are not hers alone. Her husband, Luke Miller, along with their generous neighbours, have also played a vital role in keeping this treasured event alive. Together, they’ve opened their dock and cottage to host the derby—bringing warmth, laughter, and excitement to the community year after year. This team effort has become a shining example of Kahshe's kindness and spirit.
Beyond the derby, Erin is a quiet but powerful force for good in our community. She leads by example, inspiring others to step up and give back. She reminds us of the importance of preserving our traditions and caring for one another.
As one community member shared:
“Erin doesn’t just organize an event—she creates memories that last a lifetime.”
Another noted:
“She has this incredible way of bringing people together. You just want to help when Erin’s involved because her energy is contagious.”
And perhaps most simply and powerfully:
“The joy on the kids’ faces every summer is thanks to Erin and her team. She’s the heart of this tradition.”
We are deeply grateful to Erin, Luke, and their crew for everything they’ve given to Kahshe and Bass Lakes. We are proud to honour her legacy with this award. Thank you, Erin, for all the memories, leadership, and heart you’ve given our lake community. You’ve left a lasting mark.
Want to get involved?
We’re looking for volunteers to help with this year’s 75th Fishing Derby—a historic and heartfelt send-off to Erin’s time as lead organizer.
