The 75th Annual Kermit Long Fishing Derby — A Moment of Transition
This year, we proudly celebrate the 75th Annual Kermit Long Fishing Derby, one of Kahshe Lake’s longest-running and most cherished traditions. What began as a simple gathering to share a love of fishing has evolved into a multi-generational event that brings families, friends, and young anglers together year after year. Named in honor of Kermit Long — who believed in community, nature, and giving kids a reason to get outside — the derby continues to embody that same spirit.
Over the decades, hundreds of Kahshe kids have cast their first lines during this event. Trophies have been won, stories shared, and memories made. It’s not just about catching the biggest fish — it’s about participating in something that connects us to the lake we love.
This year’s derby is especially significant after the passing of a dear friend, Kahshe Laker and devoted member of our organizing committee, Matt Gregory. Matt was the kind of person who gave his heart and soul to this community, and his absence will be deeply felt by all of us.
A celebration of Matt's life will be held on Saturday, July 27th, which also falls on our annual Fishing Derby Day—an event that Matt cherished and helped bring to life year after year.
In the spirit of keeping the Derby legacy alive, we are reaching out to ask for volunteers who are willing to take ownership of this year’s Fishing Derby. The Swirla-Miller family has generously offered their support behind the scenes, and we are confident that, together, we can make this event a continued success.
This will be the final derby hosted by the Swirla-Miller family, who have kept the tradition alive with tireless effort and unwavering heart. We owe them deep thanks — and now, we need to step up. Volunteers are urgently needed this year, and we are actively looking for someone to take over the derby for 2026 and help the derby continue for the next generation.
